LAZZARI, Pietro (1878-1979). Horses . Washington and Paris: The Black Sun Press, 1945. Oblong 4° (140 x 172mm). Proof copy. Loosely-inserted double-page manuscript title leaf with original pen-and-ink drawing by Lazzari and text 'HORSES , by , PIETRO LAZZARI , CARESSE CROSBY: EDITOR , BLACK SUN PRESS , WASHINGTON D.C. U.S.A. , 1606 20 St. NW. , PARIS FRANCE 6ième , 2 RUE CARDINALE'. Four quadruple-page, folded proof plates after Lazzari, numbered 'Page One' to 'Page Four'. Bound between 2 cardboard panels by 2 pink ties, the boards with fore-edge ties, the upper panel lettered 'Horses , By' [in red ink and brush] , 'pietro lazzari , BLACK SUN PRESS' [in black ink and brush] (boards lightly marked). [P. LAZZARI. Horses .] 8 proof sheets of p.1 [3 sheets], p.3 [3 sheets] and p.4 [2 sheets], unfolded. (Some light browning and dampstaining.) Exhibited : Grolier Club, New York (loosely-inserted exhibition label describing the bound volume, manuscript title leaf and proof sheets). FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 500 COPIES. WITH AN ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR THE TITLE ILLUSTRATED BY LAZZARI AND PROOF SHEETS OF THE PLATES. Loosely inserted is a broadsheet, oblong 4° prospectus for the work, printed in red and black and illustrated with a design after Lazzari, stating: 'Caresse Crosby , announces a new series of art publications , beginning with , HORSES , by Pietro Lazzari , [...] , Unique miniature portfolio format , 6 by 7 inches. $2.00 , LIMITED EDITION , 500 signed copies'. It appears that the design for the title was not used, since Minkoff simply gives the contents of the volume as the four folding plates, and makes no mention of either a title or a colophon leaf giving details of the edition's limitation. Minkoff A50. (2)
