Title: Le Livre des compte-faits, ou tarif general des monnoies Author: Barreme, Francois Bertrand de Place: Paris Publisher: Chez les Libraires Associes Date: 1771 Description: 8vo, [2] engraved leaves, one consisting of engraved text of explanation, the other a pictorial engraved title. Francois Barreme (1638 - 1703), a French mathematician, who enjoyed the patronage of Colbert, was the author of several such practical mathematical tables intended to hep their users avoid complicated calculations, especially in the realm of money and finances. So popular were Barreme's tables, which were constantly reprinted, that in French his name has become synonymous with ready-reckoner, or calculator (bareme). The present handbook on exchange rates first appeared in 1670 and was continuously augmented and re-edited well into the 19th century. The charming engraved frontispiece depicts a bureau of change with ladies and gentlemen handing money to the banker seated at his desk. It is quite unusual to find copies of these popular handbooks, which were intended for daily use, in fine condition and even more unusual to find them in their original bindings. Kress 1280 (the 1671 edition) and 5414 (1755); Einaudi 303 (the 1700 edition). Donated by E. K. Schreiber Rare Books New York, New York. Lot Amendments Condition: Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments; spine ends and corners worn, else very good. Item number: 243334
