Leaf from the Saint Petersburg Album Mughal, circa 1720 and later gouache heightened with gold on paper, comprising two miniatures mounted as one, the upper showing a group of six women worshipping barefoot at a shrine by night in the woods, the lower depicting three women and a child listening to a musician also by night on a terrace with trees beyond, while an attendant holds a candle, (slight flaking, both extended at edges to fit the album leaf) red border within gold rules painted with gold meandering palmette vine, on buff leaf painted with gold animals and birds among trees and rocks (negligible spotting, repaired strip on right edge), verso with six lines of large flowing black nasta'liq , the middle two lines on blue paper, the remainder on cream, within gold clouds painted with floral sprays, red border with gold interwoven vine, on dark blue leaf finely painted with gold scrolling palmette sprays, signed by Muhammad Hadi and dated AH 1170/1756-7 AD, (negligible wear) miniature 12 x 7¾in. (30.5 x 19.7cm.) calligraphy 10½ x 6in. (26.7 x 15.3cm.) leaf 18¾ x 12¾in. (47.7 x 32.5cm.)
