LEAMING, Aaron (1715-1780) and Jacob SPICER (1716-1765). The Grants, Concessions & Original Constitutions of the Province of New Jersey. The Acts Passed during the Proprietary Governments, & other Material Transactions before the Surrender, thereof to Queen Anne. &c &c. Philadelphia: W[illiam] Bradford, [1758]. 2 o (280 x 185 mm). (4) 763 pages. Title within rule border, decorative head- and tail-pieces. (A few small marginal tears mended, front free endleaf detached.) IN A CONTEMPORARY PHILADELPHIA BINDING BY WILLIAM MUIR contemporary sheep, covers with blind fillet borders, row of drawer-handle tools along one edge, red morocco label gilt-lettered "NEW-JERSEY" (head of spine chipped, corners quite worn, extremities rubbed, slight cracks at hinges), but an excellent copy in a binding from an important colonial binder, and with a superb New Jersey pedigree. Provenance : Lewis Morris Ashfield (1724-1769), prominent lawyer and grandson of Gov. Lewis Morris (inscription on front pastedown, lined out); Elisha Boudinot (1749-1819), brother of Elias Boudinot and a prominent attorney (signature on title, with note "bought at L.M. Ashfields vendue," notes in text, armorial bookplate engraved by Peter Maverick see Allen, American Bookplates , 96); Matlack (signatures). FIRST EDITION, WITH A SUPERB NEW JERSEY PROVENANCE. A highly important compilation of the fundamental New Jersey charters and session laws of the proprietary period (1664 to 1702), up to Lord Cornbury's commission and instructions as Royal Governor when New Jersey became a crown colony under Queen Anne. Publication was legislated by the New Jersey Assembly in 1752, but two years were required to collect the documents and the printing took Bradford an additional three. The imposing 763-page folio constitutes the largest volume ever issued from Bradford's press (and one of the largest from any eighteenth-century American press). Evans 8205; Felcone 156; Hildeburn 1596; Sabin 39527.
