Illustrated Excursions in Italy.
London: Thomas M'Lean, 1846. Volume I only. Folio (360 x 265 mm). 30 tinted lithographic plates, llustrations in the text, 1 map hand-colored in outline and 4 pp. of engraved sheet music. Full green morocco decoratively ruled and panelled in gilt on covers, spine tooled and lettered in gilt with 5 raised bands, gilt turn-ins, a.e.g. Condition: light foxing; joints repaired and hinges strengthened, binding lightly rubbed at places. first edition. In his introduction to the present work, Lear attests the accuracy of the lithographs which he exectued himself. Lear also believed that the book represented the first known publication depicting travels in the Abruzzi region, and his illustrations are "the first hitherto given of a part of Central Italy as Romantic as it is unfrequented."
