LELEWEL, Joachim (1786-1861). Atlas do J.Lelewela bada staroytnoci we wzgldzie geografji. w Wilnie i Warszawie: Józefa Zawadzkiego, 1818. Oblong 2° (270 x 435mm). Letterpress title within border of typographic ornaments, 2pp. text. 19 etched leaves of maps, one folding. (Title holed with slight loss to border, some spotting.) Contemporary calf-backed boards (spine torn with loss). An interesting work, reproducing 51 examples of early mapping. Joachim Lelewel was a Polish historian, a Professor at Wilno University, and later a minister in The Polish Provisional Government of 1830-31. He fled to exile in Paris and Brussels where he expanded his ideas in the work Géographie du moyen âge , (Brussels: 1852-1857). He was a pioneering writer on cartography and an early collector of maps. Phillips 133.
