Contemporary calf-backed boards (spine torn with loss). An interesting work, reproducing 51 examples of early mapping. Joachim Lelewel was a Polish historian, a Professor at Wilno University, and later a minister in The Polish Provisional Government of 1830-31. He fled to exile in Paris and Brussels where he expanded his ideas in the work Géographie du moyen âge , (Brussels: 1852-1857). He was a pioneering writer on cartography and an early collector of maps. Phillips 133.
