LEMAIRE, Joseph. Traité sur les dents; contenant la physiologie, la pathologie, et l'art opératoire. Paris: A.Belin for the author and Béchet, 1822-1824. 3 volumes, 4° (251 x 197mm). Mounted lithographed portrait frontispiece of the author. (Without the plates in vol.III.) CONTEMPORARY RED MOROCCO BY JOZON & CHAUVET, finely tooled and blocked in gilt and blind à la cathedrale , covers with outer blind acanthus leaf-roll border, inner broad border of five fillets and a small roll-tool, with ornamental gothick cornerpieces, surrounding a central blind elaborate panel highlighted with small gilt tools, spines in five compartments with raised bands, two lettered in gilt, the others tooled in gilt and black, gilt turn-ins, cream watered-silk liners and endleaves, g.e. A VERY FINE PRESENTATION COPY ON LARGE PAPER OF LEMAIRE'S PRINCIPAL WORK, probably bound for one of his more eminent dental patients. Little detail is known of the author's life but he was dental surgeon to Rochambeau, Lafayette, King Maximilian I and Queen Caroline of Bavaria and is styled Chevalier on the title. The first volume calls for les planches propres à établir mes opinions in the third volume, however these were clearly never bound in this set. The binders, whose earliest recorded work is dated 1824, are from a small group of binders whose own work is known from only a few signed examples, either because they primarily worked on the overflow from the great ateliers, or because they were only able to survive independently for a short period, before returning to the anonymity of work as finishers and forwarders within the large ateliers.
