Title: Letter awaiting President Grant’s Inauguration Author: Cady, C.E. Place: Washington, D.C Publisher: Date: Feb. 27, 1869 Description: C.E. Cady. Autograph Letter Signed. Washington, D.C. Feb. 27, 1869. 6pp. With original mailing envelope. To George Coventry, Utica, New York. “…The Capital is full of visitors. Hotels are full. Boarding-houses are in the heyday of mutton-chop and rancid butter. I was told this morning that Willard’s Hotel had turned away sixty thousand applicants for rooms within two weeks… Great preparations are being made for the Inauguration. Military and fire companies and civic societies will parade. Ireland will be pugnacious. Teutonia will lie at the Lager spigot. The timid will hold their hands in their pockets while the ‘Plug Uglies’ and ‘Dead Rabbits’ lie (stand) in wait. And finally ‘window room for rent’ on the avenue at paying rates…I attempted to get into the Methodist Church (called the Metropolitan) to the dedication yesterday. Went three quarters of an hour before service, could not get my nose in!...Seats were reserved for the Magnates and invited guests. It suggested a new thing to me… worshipping God on tickets!!” Cady, cynical observer of local Irish, Germans, pick-pockets and rich church-goers, taught at Walworth’s Business College in Washington and later headed the Walworth College in New York. Grant, General turned President, was inaugurated six days later. During his years in office, he would regularly attend services at the new Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church, dedicated that weekend with a standing-room-only sermon by a popular British preacher. Lot Amendments Condition: Some slight edge wear, very good. Item number: 248097
