Letter handwritten and signed by R. Menachem Deutsch, Rabbi of Palanka. Palanka (Hungary), 1857. Sent to R. Shlomo Zalman Ullman Rabbi of Makova (Makó, Hungary). Request to intercede in a matter concerning giving a get (divorce bill), and to find a halachic solution to coercing a man to divorce his wife. R. Menachem Deutsch explains the importance of the matter, and writes of the distinction and honor of the agunah: "…This woman is the daughter of the tzaddik… and this has brought shame upon the family… and if not for my sake, please respond for the sake of my grandfather R. David Deutsch…". R. Menachem Deutsch (1819-1904, Otzar HaRabbanim 13233), grandson and disciple of R. David Deutsch author of Ohel David, was raised by his grandfather R. David Deutsch Rabbi of Ir Chadash (Nowe Miasto), and also studied under the tutelage of his uncle R. Meir Ash Rabbi of Uzhhorod (Ungvar) and in the Pressburg Yeshiva under the Ktav Sofer. After his marriage in 1845, he served as dayan in Ir Chadash, in 1850 was appointed Rabbi of Galante and from 1856 served as Rabbi of Palanka. He published the book Ohel David written by his grandfather R. David Deutsch to which he added his own novellae in the Avnei Zikaron and She'erit Menachem sections of the book. The recipient, R. Shlomo Zalman Ullman (1792-1863), author of the Yeri'ot Shlomo responsa and prominent Hungarian rabbi, served as rabbi of Lackenbach, and later, through the efforts of the Chatam Sofer, was appointed Rabbi of Makó (Makova), a position he held for many decades.
