Jansen, [1795/96]. 2 works in 4 parts in 2 volumes, 4to (245 x 183 mm). First voyage: Engraved folding map, 12 engraved plates; half-title. Second voyage: Half-title. 22 engraved plates (5 folding). (Minor pale spotting and finger soiling, map slightly dampstained at margins.) Contemporary sheep, smooth spines gilt, green and red morocco lettering-pieces gilt. FIRST EDITION of Levaillant's account of his two voyages into the interior of South Africa. "No other account of travel in South Africa has ever attracted the attention of the western world to the same extent... from 1790 to 1814. Le Vaillant's books did more to place the Cape on the world map than did the exploits of any statesman or general" (Bokhorst, François Le Vaillant Traveller in South Africa ). With the plate of the "Hottentot" woman facing p. 371 (supressed in later editions). Mendelssohn I:889-892; Nissen ZBI 2480, 2482. Estimate $500-700
