LEWIN, William (1747-c.1795). The Birds of Great Britain Systematically Arranged, Accurately Engraved, and Painted from Nature . London: J. Johnson 1795-1801. 8 volumes bound in 4, 4° (304 x 224mm). Text in English and French with title-pages in both languages in each volume. 336 hand-coloured engraved plates, comprising frontispiece and 277 plates of birds [numbered 1-267, 18*, 19*, 27, 66, 81*, 84*, 94*, 100*, 245 and 251] and 58 plates of eggs [numbered 1-14, 16-59; plate 15 was never published]. (Text leaves Q1-2 in vol. I and G1-2 in vol. VI lightly spotted, very short marginal tear in text leaf Q1 in vol. V, occasional very minor offsetting from plates onto text leaves.) Contemporary blue straight-grained morocco by Edmund Lloyd of Harley Street with his ticket in first vol., sides panelled with a very wide gilt and blind border, spines gilt in compartments, gilt turn-ins and edges, pink endpapers (extremities lightly rubbed, spines lightly faded to green). Provenance : Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne (1819-1895; engraved armorial bookplates). Second edition; the first having been issued in only 60 folio copies, with all the plates as original watercolour drawings without any engraved backing. Nissen states correctly that there are 336 plates for this edition, but does not mention the supplementary plate numbered 251.
