FIRST EDITION. With the remaining Narnia books: The Horse and his Boy (New York, 1954), The Magician's Nephew (London, 1955) and The Last Battle (London, 1956). The inscribed and annotated books are: volumes I & II only (of 3) of Sir Philip Sidney's Works (Cambridge 1912-22), Edmund Spenser's Complaints (London, 1928) and The Shepherd's Calendar (London, 1930), Janet Spens' Spenser's Faerie Queene (London, 1934), C. S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet (London, 1938) and N. W. Clerk's A Grief Observed (London, 1961). The rest of the collection comprises works by the author including his first published book Spirits in Bondage (London, 1919, under the nom de plume Clive Hamilton, The Screwtape Letters (London, 1942) and his autobiography Surprised by Joy (London, 1955), some with correspondence to Lewis loosely-inserted. Provenance : George Sayer (b.1914). A REMARKABLE COLLECTION OF WORKS BY LEWIS OR FROM HIS LIBRARY, MANY INSCRIBED OR ANNOTATED BY HIM, FROM THE COLLECTION OF HIS BIOGRAPHER GEORGE SAYER Sayer was a pupil of Lewis's at Oxford, and the two men remained friends. Sayer, who was also a close friend of Lewis's fellow Inkling J.R.R. Tolkien, subsequently wrote Lewis's biography, Jack. C.S. Lewis and his Times (London: 1988). (32)
