Beschreibung:

LIBERTY & CO., A RARE LARGE CARVED GILDED AND POLYCHROME PAINTED RETAILER'S SIGN DATED 1875 Hanging within a later hand forged wrought iron stand, the sign finished on both sides 187cm high, 123cm wide, 66cm deep (including stand) This retailer's sign is possibly the original sign which hung outside of the premises of Liberty & Co. on Regent Street, London. Liberty & Co. was founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty. Liberty prided the ground-breaking firm with 'creating new fashions' rather than 'following existing ones'. The premises on Regent Street presented six floors of cutting-edge design, and wares from the finest craftspeople around the world and at home. Probably most recognisably, Liberty provided opportunity for several artisans and important figures of the Arts and Crafts period, including William Morris and Archibald Knox.
