Title: Life of Japan (by the first Japanese-American lawyer, who played an important role in the 1907 San Francisco school segregation crisis) Author: MIyakawa, Masuji Place: New York Publisher: Baker and Taylor Date: 1907 Description: First Edition. Original cloth, with front cover color design. 301pp.+24 pp.appendix of reviews of Miyakawa’s earlier book on the American political and legal system (see other listing in this sale) Profusely illustrated with plates and text drawings. Inscribed on half title: “Hon. V.H. Metcalf, Compliments of Masuji Miyakawa, the Author. Wash. Oct. 9, ’07.” Important association copy of a book with a deceptively blasé title, written by the first Japanese-American lawyer, who had actively opposed the 1906 order by the San Francisco School Board segregating Japanese students in an “Oriental School” which led to an international crisis between the Japanese and American Governments. Metcalf, Theodore Roosevelt’s Secretary of Commerce and Labor and Secretary of the Navy, had been sent by the President to negotiate the compromise which rescinded the humiliating segregation order but also led to restrictions on further Japanese immigration. Tipped in, probably by Metcalf, is a New York newspaper clipping reviewing the book, with the headline: “In forthcoming book, said to be inspired by Japanese Government, Possibilities of War between Two Nations Are Discussed – Author, however, argues for Peace and proposes ‘The United States of Japan and America.’ Lot Amendments Condition: Very good.
