LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, [to Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas], [Washington, D.C.], 17 August 1861. 56 words plus signature and date, written on the verso of a part of an ALS of Brigadier General William B. Franklin to Abraham Lincoln, n.p., n.d., with an autograph endorsement signed of Lorenzo Thomas, Adjutant General's Office, 13 August 1861. 1 page, small 4to, on lined stationery, slight staining and small tear along crease . RIGHTING A MISTAKE OF THE SENATE IN REGARD TO AN APPOINTMENT. In response to an appeal from General Franklin (1823-1903), a brigade commander who had recently fought at Manassas, and subsequent support from Adjutant General Thomas (1804-1875), Lincoln endorses a Union officer: "I repeat that if Adjutant Genl Thomas is reasonably well satisfied that Capt Dallas was rejected by the Senate through misapprehension of facts, he is to be re-appointed. It is the opinion of the Adjutant General, and of Genl Franklin, as shown by what they have written written [ sic ] within, that he is a good officer." Alexander James Dallas, whom the correspondance concerns, began his military career in 1846 as a midshipman in the United States Navy and transferred to the infantry in 1851. In May of 1861 he received a commission as a Captain in the 12th United States Infantry, but it was rejected by the Senate on August 5th because of the incorrect belief that he had been dismissed from the Navy. His reappointment as Captain was finally confirmed on February 20, 1862.( The Collected Works , ed. R.P. Basler, vol. IV, pp. 484,491).
