QUILLARD, 27 engraved plates (one double-page, three folding), engraved head- and tail-pieces (the first folding plate with repaired tear crossing image). (Some intermittent pale browning to a few leaves.) Modern calf antique, spine gilt, central oval on front cover preserving the original gilt-cipher of the Duke. Provenance : early inscripition effaced on title. The funeral celebration in Lisbon for D. NUNO ÁLVARES PEREIRA DE MELO (1638-1727), Fourth Marquês of Perreira, Fifth Conde of Tentugal, First Duke of Cadaval. The text provides many eulogistic sermons and details about the last two years of his life, after his stroke in 1725. The Duke was Condestával of the Kingdom during the reign of D. Pedro II. Minister plenipotentiary, he signed the first peace treaty with Spain in 1688, following the independence of Portugal. Contemporary copies are recorded with the Duke's cipher stamped in gilt on both covers, here preserved on the front. Berlin 3287.
