LOMEIER, Johannes (1636-99). De bibliothecis . Zutphen: Johannes Columbius at Deventer for Henricus Beerren, 1669. 8 o (149 x 90 mm). Last leaf with errata and colophon. (Somewhat browned.) BOUND FOR LOUIS XIV OF FRANCE: contemporary gold-tooled crimson morocco, triple fillet on sides, arms of Louis XIV (Olivier 2494 fer 9 smallest version, described but not reproduced) in the center, the King's monogram in compartments of spine, a small compartment (second from the bottom) perhaps intended for the date left blank, fleur-de-lys roll on turn-ins, sprinkled edges, (binding slightly worn at extremities). Folding cloth case. Provenance : Louis XIV (r. 1643-1715) -- France, Royal Library (red library-stamp) -- Mark Pattison (1813-84, rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, biographer of Casaubon), blind stamp on title -- James Thompson Gibson Craig (1799-1886, Scottish antiquary, friend of Sir Walter Scott , Sotheby sale June 1887 -- James W. Ellsworth ? (pencil note on front endpaper), collection sold to A.S.W. Rosenbach -- Harrison D. Horblit (Christie's East sale, 20 April 1994, lot 84). FIRST EDITION of an early work on the history, architecture and organization of libraries, on librarians and enemies of books.
