Bn., I.D.F.) impressed naming, mounted court style for wear, nearly extremely fine (3) £120-160 Footnote Valentine Carl Whybrow Unger was born in Hampshire on 17 September 1886. Living in India, he was employed by the Customs Service, eventually becoming Superintendent of the Customs Department at Customs House, Charnock Place, Calcutta. Serving in the Volunteers, he was with the Mussorie Volunteer Rifles, 1901-03; the 1st Calcutta Volunteer Rifles, 1903-04 and then the 2nd Calcutta Volunteer Rifles from 1906 until the Great War. In the War he was first commissioned on 30 September 1916 and became a Lieutenant in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 30 September 1917. His ‘war service’ was in Waziristan, July-September 1917, as Officer Commanding Supply and Transport and Commandant of the Camel Convalescent Depot. On the creation of the Indian Defence Force, he was appointed a Captain in the 37th Calcutta Presidency Battalion with effect from 1 April 1917.
