LONGMAN, HURST, REES, ORME, & BROWNE -- Acton Frederick GRIFFITHS, compiler. Bibliotheca anglo-poetica; or, A Descriptive Catalogue of a Rare and Rich Collection of Early English Poetry . London: for the proprietors of the collection, 1815. 8 o (258 x 167 mm). Title printed in red and black. Hand-colored woodcut frontispiece by Barriman, engraved title vignette various portraits and initials. Full green morocco gilt, gilt-panelled sides, spine richly gilt, edges gilt, by Riviere. Provenance : Sir Charles E.H. Chadwyck Healey (armorial bookplate). ONE OF FIFTY LARGE-PAPER COPIES of this luxuriously produced priced booksellers' catalogue of the outstanding collection of early English poetry formed by Thomas Hill (1760-1840), who had purchased the large poetical library of the mezzotint engraver, antiquary and bibliographer, Thomas Park (1759-1834). The collection apparently changed hands before it was purchased by Longman's. "Longman's speculation was not a profitable one. A few of the more expensive books were bought by Sykes and Heber, but the bulk remained unsold and brought small prices when Longman placed them in the Bibliotheca Selecta, a catalogue of the library of an eminent collector removed from the North of England (16 February 1818)...the larger portion of the books described...were subsequently brought together again in the Britwell library" (De Ricci). De Ricci, pp. 90-91.
