Lorenzo Ignacio Tiulen, La Rebelion de los Animales contra los Hombres, in Spanish verse translation, manuscript on paper [Spain, mid-eighteenth century] 26 leaves, complete, c. 22 lines in a good italic hand, frontispiece and titles in larger script, last leaf once with red wax seal, the accompanying paper tab now causing splits to edge of leaf, small cuts in last leaf, overall good condition, 195 by 150mm.; nineteenth-century marbled pasteboards with leather spine, gilt-tooled with flowerheads and foliate sprays as well as title LA / REBE/LION, small holes to top of spine, one small hole in leather at foot of front board, else good condition This narrative is set in the long tradition of inverting the natural order of humans and animals, that began in the Ancient World and ultimately continues in modern literature such as George Orwells, Animal Farm. That here announces on its frontispiece that it is a corrected and augmented text, here in a third edition, and was translated from Italian. It opens with a long prose prologue discussing modern philosophy on the nature of animals and man, which cites Voltaire.
