L'ORME, Philibert de (ca.1515-1570). Nouvelles inventions pour bien bastir et a petits fraiz, trouvees n'agueres par... de L'orme. Paris: Federic Morel: 1561. 2° (308 x 216mm). Ruled in red throughout. G6 blank. Morel's woodcut mulberry-tree device on title, 34 woodcut illustrations, 23 full-page, of L'Orme's architectural device pasted onto verso of final leaf. (Lacking final blank, light browning.) Old calf, spine gilt (neatly rebacked and cornered). Provenance : Nonantz ? (inscription dated 1684). FIRST EDITION of L'Orme's first published work: a technical treatise on the construction timber roofs. The "text is a portion of de L'Orme's planned volume on all phases of architecture... Le premier tome de l'architecture , in nine books, appeared in 1567... The Nouvelles inventions was reprinted in 1568 and 1576... to accompany the second issue and second edition of the Architecture and was added to it in 1626 as books 10 and 11": Mortimer, Harvard French 354; Adams L-1514; Fowler 98.
