The collection was formed by Sir Robert Smith 1st Baronet JP., MP., youngest son of George Smith who was involved with shipping in Glasgow. The family owned both Crowmallie and Pittodrie (now a hotel) and Sir Robert was elected as the Member of Parliament for Aberdeen and Kincardine Central 1924, holding it until 1945. He was also a Justice of the Peace for the County of Aberdeen.
