LOUIS CHORIS (1795-1828) Vues et paysages des rgions quinoxiales, recueillis dans un voyage autour du monde... avec une introduction et un texte explicatif. Paris: Paul Renouard, 1826. 2 (435 x 290mm). Half-title. 24 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Louis Choris printed by F.Nol or Bove. (Spotting or browning to some text and about nine plates, early ownership stamp just touching image of the 11th plate, similar stamp on verso of final plate.) Contemporary marbled-paper boards, the upper cover with the centrally-placed gilt arms of the "College Royal d'Orleans" (neatly rebacked and cornered, with tears to corners), later cloth slipcase. Provenance : College Royal d'Orlans (binding); Bibliotheque Lyce d'Orlans (ownership stamps); Bibliotheque Gnrale, Lyce de Garons, Orlans (ownership stamps). ONE OF 50 LARGE-PAPER COPIES WITH HAND-COLOURED PLATES. Louis (or Ludovik) Choris, a Russian of German extraction, showed a talent for natural history at a remarkably early age, and won high praise for his work on Biberstein's journey to the Caucasus in 1813. The present views recall the voyage of the Rurik , 1815-1818, commanded by the Russian Otto von Kotzbue, and the expedition's search for the North-West passage, entering the Pacific via the Horn and returning to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. Choris, the official artist on the expedition, was invited by the St.Petersberg Academy to accompany Kotzbue and the present work represents a fine cross-section of the places that the expedition visited: it includes views of Teneriffe, Brazil, Chile, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Kamchatka, Philippines, the Cape of Good Hope and Saint Helena. Borba de Moraes pp.180-181; Brunet I, 1851; Sabin 12885.
