Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1988 Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1988 Packed in individual gift boxes 54% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay (a high percentage as this was a Chardonnay year) and 11% oak fermented. Some would call 1988 the last of the 'classic' years as from 1989 the climate entered a warm cycle. Cristal always displays a haunting bouquet and a texture of pure lace - in the 1988 there is also underlying vinosity and structure which make it awe-inspiring. At the end of 2009, I tasted a bottle that was disgorged in September 2006. White truffles and dried apricots on the nose, plus orange skins that were almost smoky. Look out for the candied citrus too which comes from the Chardonnay. A real taste of marmalade with great freshness and hazelnuts at the end. Liquid honeysuckle. SS. Lot 5482 12 bts (2 cn) per lot: HKD 24000-34000 per lot: USD 3000-4500 Tsar Alexander II in 1876 was the inspiration for the covetable transparent bottle, but the Champagne is the result of Roederer's art and skill. All the grapes come from Roederer's own vineyards and the heady honey, vanillin, toffee and dried fruits delights of this sublime Champagne are a reflection of their superb sites. At other times, one can pick up hazelnuts, nougatine, truffles and peaches. Cristal always combines intense vinosity with a glorious, lingering laciness. What is there not to like? SS. Quantity: 1
