Provenance: Obscura Antiques & Oddities, New York Dr. Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux as a medical student in Paris developed a papier mache method to build anatomical replicas for study. Capable of being disassembled to examine details of organs, Auzoux's models were laboriously annotated and delicately hand-painted. These models replicated dissection and were cheaper and more durable than the wax models that preceded them, making them the standard for medical research throughout the 19th Century. By 1928, the demand for Auzoux's models was so great that he opened a factory in the town of Saint Aubin d'Ecrosville. By the 1860s, Auzoux had expanded his practice to include animal and botanical models as well. This full-sized male model is a scarce signed and dated example on stand, including display cabinet. C
