(Lt. Joseph) Eighteen Views taken at and near Rangoon, first edition, engraved allegorical title/dedication by R.W.Smart after Stothard, engraved list of subscribers with mezzotint vignette by J.Bromley after T.Stothard, 6pp. lithographed handwritten list of subscribers including those in India, 18 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates after Moore, plates 4 & 14 marked proof, plate 16 in first state with “ajacent” in caption, without the folding map of Rangoon and the smaller format text from pocket at beginning (both often lacking), foxed and water-stained at beginning, mostly affecting title and lists of subscribers but also slightly the first plate within platemark up to lower edge of image, otherwise plates clean and bright, plates 14 & 15 with tear to upper edge not affecting image, contemporary ink signature of Frederick Cowslade of Esleigh, Reading on front free endpaper, original red roan-backed printed boards, both boards with vertical lithographed title "Birman Empire..." within Burmese design (upper cover "Part I", lower cover corrected by hand to read "...II & III"), rubbed and water-stained, spine worn and defective, pocket inside front cover detached, [Abbey Travel 404; Tooley 334], oblong folio, [1825]. *** Superb series of aquatints depicting Rangoon, captured by the British in 1824 during the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1824-26. The plates are a mixture of battle scenes from the war and idyllic views of Burmese temples and pagodas; the latter, however, display a constant reminder of British Imperial power with the ever-present British soldiers. This copy includes the rare lithographed list of subscribers, mostly of subscribers from India. A second series of six plates, Views...in the Birman Empire by Capt. Frederick Marryat was published the following year.
