VG- (3.5). Light edgewear; spine end bumped; dusty soiling to covers; staple rust. Tan pages. Kurtzman cover concept. Art by Wood. Krigstein, Davis, Elder. First magazine-format issue. The story is often repeated that MAD became a magazine to avoid the Comics Code. In fact, Bill Gaines adapted the magazine format to retain the editorial services of Harvey Kurtzman who was determined to work in the more prestigious magazine format, if not for Gaines then elsewhere. "'I'd always dreamed of getting into the slick magazines,' [Kurtzman] said. 'I wanted to go legit. The difference between slick and newsprint and comic books was like the difference between champagne and mud water. That was my dream." -S.C. Ringgenberg, "Memories Most Mad," Comics Scene #47, Nov. 1994. PBA Grading Guarantee: Any individual comic book lot (not group lots) graded by PBA is guaranteed to match CGC grading. If the buyer chooses to have the comic CGC certified and that certification is lower than PBA’s, the lot may be returned for a full refund of the sales price (hammer price plus buyer’s premium). See terms and conditions for details. Consignments Accepted for PBA's Next Comic Book Auction. Golden Age, Silver Age, Pre-Code, Original Art, Interesting Ephemera Sought. Contact [email protected] for details. PBA COMICS March 26th Comic Book Sale catalogues available. Supplies Limited. Softcover catalogues limited to 200 copies ($45 + $5 postage/handling). Hardcovers limited to 26 lettered copies, dust jackets, special limitation plates ($150). Contact [email protected]
