MAILLET, Benot de (1656-1738). Telliamed ou entretiens d'un philosophe Indien avec un Missionnaire Franois sur la Diminution de la Mer, la Formation de la Terre, l'Origine de l'Homme, &c. Mis en ordre sur les Mmoires de seu M. de Maillet. Amsterdam: L'Honor & Fils, 1748. 2 volumes, 8 o (191 x 115 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece. FIRST EDITION. Important work on the diminution of the sea and the expansion of the continents, presented under the name of a fictitious Indian philosopher ('de Maillet' spelled backwards). Since the ideas of this work were consider dangerous and disturbing it wasn't published until 10 years after Maillet's death eventhough it was written between 1692 and 1708.
