Unmounted albumen photograph, 5.25 x 7.25 in., by Civil War photographer John Coates Browne of General Ambrose Burnside, General Robert Anderson Colonel Osbourne and a man by the name of W.H. Denning posed on a porch. On the back is penciled “Photograph of Generals” and “Print made 1864. and neg. broken.” The image comes with a letter penned by the photographer in 1898 to Miss Ida Tarbell, the famous author that wrote about Lincoln. The letter, addressed to "My Dear Miss Tarbell," dated April 7, 1898, reads: I send you a photograph that I made in Sep 1864 this a group of four persons, on the left Col Osbourne, next Genl A.E. Burnside nest Genl Robert Anderson (of Fort Sumpter House) behind Genl Anderson is W.H. Denning. The picture was taken at a small farm house opposite West Point. Both Anderson and Burnside were much interested in examining the negative and after a close inspection by the latter, Anderson said, "There are no flies on your head this time Burney." This remark by Anderson was completely out by the caricature of Burnside that __________ his bald head covered with insects. After a pleasant chat the party drove to West Point and it was the last time I saw either of the __________ officers. Very Truly Yours, John C. Browne Condition: Even toning to albumen.
