Mamas and the Papas (California Dreamin’) 1965 promotional letter Author: Wickham, Andy ‘Wipeout’ Place: Los Angeles Publisher: Date: ca.1965 Description: 3pp. Original printed promotional letter. Introducing the Mamas and the Papas, a rock group which has been called “a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s” – a new vocal quartet about to become famous with their release, “California Dreamin’”. In this unconventional and colorfully-written promotional letter, noting that the Mamas and Papas had “just made their first record together”, Wickham described their life “in a nutty world of semi-existentialism of cuckoo clocks and antique lampshade, of beat-up old cars and Indian boats, of longish hair and longer hair, of folk-singers and not-so-folk singers….” He goes on to introduce each of the four members of the group, who would stay together for three years while producing one hit record after another. Like the group he was touting, the British-born Wickham was then an unknown, a Los Angeles record company publicist. Two years later, he would moved to Warner Brothers Records to “scout new talent and forge a bond between rebellious young artists and established Warner executives”, going on to sign recording contracts with such artists as Joni Mitchell and Jethro Tull and to produce recordings by the Evelyn Brothers, Nancy Sinatra, Goldie Hawn and many others. Lot Amendments Condition: Some staining along top edge; very good. Item number: 319698
