MANET, Edouard (1832-1883). Autograph letter signed ('E. Manet') to 'Mon cher Champfleury', Paris, Monday 19 October n.y. [1868], inviting him to join him in his studio, 'Soyez donc assez aimable pour passer à l'atelier un de ces après-midi - j'espère bien m'y trouver mais si par hazard je n'y etais pas prenez ma clef chez la concierge', one page, 8vo ; framed and glazed, with a photograph of Manet. Jules Husson Champfleury (1821-1889), the writer and critic, was the author of Les Chats (1870), a scientific but also humorous work on the place of cats in human society. Manet produced a lithograph to publicise this in 1868, as well as supplying a number of etchings for the edition; as 19 October fell on a Monday in 1868, this seems the most likely year for the present letter.
