Manuscript leaf from "The Reconciliation" Lafcadio Hearn, c.1900 HEARN, Lafcadio (1850-1904). Autograph manuscript leaf from Hearn’s short story "The Reconciliation," undated. One page (184 x 127mm), in ink. Bound into the first volume of: The Writings of Lafcadio Hearn. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1922. Manuscript edition, signed by Hearn's wife Koizumi Setsu (this is number 161 of 750). 16 volumes, octavo. Half vellum over green damask silk, original jackets (some staining). Autograph manuscript, apparently a draft, from Hearn’s short story “The Reconciliation.” Originally published in his 1900 collection of Japanese folk tales, Shadowings, the story describes a man who leaves his wife for a younger woman, only to attempt a reconciliation—and meet her vengeful ghost. This story was adapted for the 1964 film adaptation of Hearn’s work entitled Kwaidan and directed by Masaki Kobayashi.
