MANUTIUS, ALDUS (1452-1515). Grammaticae Institutiones Graecae , in Greek. Edited by Marcus Musurus (c.1470-1517). Venice: Aldine Press [Andreas Torresanus and sons], November 1515. 4° (204 x 149mm). Aldine dolphin-and-anchor device (Fletcher 5) on title and final verso, woodcut strapwork headpiece, initial spaces with guide-letter. Greek (text) and roman (title, dedication, colophon) types. Device and headpiece lightly highlighted with yellow. (First and last page very lightly soiled, occasional light stain or dampstain.) Late 18th-century red morocco gilt, triple fillet border on sides, stipple floral tool in spine compartments, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (missing spine label, light rubbing at spine extremities). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF ALDUS'S OWN GREEK GRAMMAR. Having devoted his extensive publishing career to the promotion of classical literature and the aids with which to study them, Aldus's own Greek grammar remained unfinished at his death on 6 February 1515. His devoted friend and frequent editor, Marcus Musurus, prepared the text for posthumous publication, dedicating it to the renowned French bibliophile and patron (and later agent at Paris) of the Aldine Press, Jean Grolier. In his heartfelt address to Grolier mourning Aldus's premature death, brought on in part by Aldus's habit of putting work before health, Musurus sets out a desiderata for Aldus's successors at the press, listing the Old and New Testaments, commentaries on the poets and on Aristotle, Galen, Strabo, Pausanias, and Plutarch's Lives , among others. With few exceptions, they were published by the Aldine press in subsequent years. RARE. No copy has sold at auction since 1965. Copies of Aldus's Latin grammar, printed in more than a dozen editions, are often confused with it. Adams M-428; Ahmanson-Murphy 120; Bibliazzi, Laurenziana , 133.9; Renouard 73:10 (très rare).
