Title: Map of the Region Adjacent to the Bay of San Francisco. J.D. Whitney, State Geologist, W.H. Bewer, W.M. Gabb and A. Rémond, Assistants. C.F. Hoffmann, Topographer. The Coast, Rancho, Township and Section lines from material furnished by the U.S. Coast Survey and the U.S. Surveyor General's Office, the Topography chiefly from original Surveys by C.F. Hoffmann. Scale 2 miles to 1 inch Author: California, State Geological Survey Place: [Sacramento] Publisher: State of California Date: 1867 Description: Lithographed topographical map. Engraved by Julius Bien New York. 113.7x83.5 cm. (44¾x32¾"), backed with linen & sectioned for folding, set loose in original cloth folder lettered in gilt, ribbon ties, 19x23 cm (7½x9"). Scarce and important map from 1867 detailing the physical land features of the San Francisco Bay, with the various marshes, swamps, landings, creeks and other aspects in and surrounding the Bay. The map extends south to north from Gilroy to a little north of Napa and west to east from a little west of Bolinas to Mt. Hamilton. Land grant Ranchos are shown. The official boundary of San Francisco City and County marked in blue ink by hand, possibly added later. This was issued in a revised version in 1868 and then in 1873. Warren Heckrotte notes that "This first edition has much less cultural detail - place names and representation of towns - than the 1873 edition. Soundings are not represented but otherwise the topography seems to be the same. This map is rare." Provenance: PBA, 4/17/08 References: Goetzman, Exploration and Empire, discusses the California Geological Survey and also Hoffmann. The 1873 map is reproduced, p 364. Brewster, J.D. Whitney , pp 263, 399. Vogdes. Lot Amendments Condition: Paper a little toned, some chipping and wear to margins, some folds tender, an old tape stain from repair; corners of case rubbed; very good. Item number: 265221
