Marc Chagall (1887-1985) Nicolas Gogol, Les Ames mortes, Tériade, Paris, 1948 etchings with aquatint, 1923-7, on Arches, title, text, justification, eleven etched vignettes for the chapter headings, eleven index plates carrying outline etchings of the prints, and the complete set of 95, signed in pen and black ink on the justification, copy number 76 from the edition of 285 (there was also an edition of 50 with a suite on Japan and 33 hors commerce copies), the full sheets as published, each with margins, the plates with some off-setting, some plates with stray traces of printer's ink in the margins or on the reverse, plate 56 with a short tear at the right sheet edge, otherwise generally in very good condition, loose in paper wrappers with title printed in black on front, some foxing, within cream paper-covered boards and slipcase, title on spine, the back of the case broken(album) overall S. 400 x 269mm.
