MARIUS MICHEL Jean (1821-90) and Henri (1846-1923). L'Ornementation des reliures modernes . Paris: Georges Chamerot for Marius Michel 1889. 4 o (240 x 170 mm). 15 plates. Contemporary Jansenist brown morocco, by Marius Michel (stamp-signed on flyleaf), gilt rolls on turn-ins, gilt edges. Modern cloth fall-down-back box, which also contains a copy in original printed wrappers of the same authors' Essai sur la décoration extérieure des livres (Morgand et Fatout, 1878). Provenance : Emile Escoffier (bookplate). LIMITED EDITION, number 184 of 250 copies on vélin teinté du Marais, of an edition of 300. The theories propounded in this book were Henri's. Marius-Michel-fils was not only the greatest and most innovative binder of his generation, he never tired of arguing about his art, especially as here about how a binding should relate to the content of a book. These two publications, which are not short on criticism of other binders, may also be seen as propaganda for the Marius Michel atelier. (2)
