Beschreibung:

Martin Brothers Stoneware Bird Jar and Cover Dated 1890 Modeled in a standing pose, with a highly amused expression, mounted on a black painted wood base, inscribed Martin Bros., London & Southall, 11-1890 and C.D. Martin. Height overall 8 3/4 inches (21.8 cm). Provenance: Sotheby's, NY, The Harriman Judd Collection British Art Pottery , January 22, 2001, . Exhibited: The Martin Brothers Potters , Sotheby's, Belgravia, September 26-October 14, 1978, cat. 225. Literature: The Martin Brothers Potters by Malcolm Haslam, p. 89, 91 fig. 122. C The Flower Family Collection
Note: Although dated 1890, according to author Malcolm Haslam in The Martin Brothers Potters, the jar was not completed and fired until 1906. The bird was modeled by Charles Martin Appears to be in generally good, undamaged condition; the jar is affixed to the wood base with two large screws, now rusted; there are four small drill holes in the flange of the cover at the front and four additional small drill holes in the flange at the back, presumably, as made at the factory, and presumably used to hold wire; a few lines are visible on the interior side of the jar, some of which have a vertical orientation and some that have a horizontal orientation; these lines appear to be in the making rather than hairline fissures, and are mentioned only for accuracy, not of any apparent consequence; retains original lot sticker from the Harriman Judd Collection auction; not black lighted Height of figure: 7 3/4 inches (19.4 cm)
