MARX, Karl (1818-1883). Autograph letter signed ('K. Marx') to Collet Dobson Collet, 23 November 1868, in English, one page, 8vo (209 x 136mm) , integral blank (short tears to left and right margins). DAS KAPITAL . Marx assures Collet that he may 'use my letter in whatever form you like' [referring to one of his letters on Russian manipulation of the international money markets (see previous lot)], and goes on to give the full reference for a citation of his most famous work, including an English translation: 'The title of my work is " Das Kapital. Kritik der Politischen Oekonomie . Erster Band. Hamburg , 1867" "Capital. Criticism of Political Economy. First Volume. Hamburg, 1867"'. A pamphlet he had sent belongs to [Sigismund] Borkheim, and is to be returned to him: 'The secret of that pamphlet seems to be: Gastenberg, agent of the Barings; the Barings, Foreign Loan Contractors, and, especially, loan contractors for the Russian Government'. Marx expressed himself more frankly in a letter to Friedrich Engels on the same day: 'I have burnt my fingers with the blasted Urquhartites ... Urquhart wants to print one of those letters over my name in his next Diplomatic Review ... So I am in for it . It's a consolation that not a soul reads the Diplomatic Review ... In order to give the affair more weight, they obviously intend to cite me as the author of Capital , which would be an abomination in their eyes if they knew it'.
