Full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion on a3 v , with the final blank. (Margins cut close affecting a few signatures and page-numbers.) Early 20th-century blue levant morocco, inner gilt dentelle. FIRST EDITION of one of the first printed accounts of the death and funeral of Mary, Queen of Scots. Scott 173. [George BUCHANAN (1506-1582)]. De Maria Scotorum Regina, totaque eius contra regem coniuratione, foedo cum Bothuelio adulterio...historia . [London: John Day 1571]. Part 1 only (of 2), 8° (146 x 92mm). (Title and a few other leaves a little dustsoiled, light stains at the end.) Purple hard-grain morocco gilt by Eedy, g.e. Provenance : Thomas Marsh (contemporary purchase inscription on title, ownership inscription on last page and a few marginalia); Earl of Crewe (bookplate). STC 3978; Scott 75 (mentioning only this part). [William UDALL]. The Historie of the Life and Death of Mary Stuart Queene of Scotland . London: John Haviland for William Saheares, 1636. 12° (141 x 84mm). Additional engraved title by Marshall and a portrait. (Small rust hole in F4 and a few natural flaws.) Contemporary calf (upper cover nearly detached, spine rubbed). Provenance : John Newton (purchase inscription on engraved title, perhaps the mathematician, 1622-1678). STC 24510; Johnson p. 40; and 8 other volumes, including a presentation copy of John Scott's Bibliography of Works Relating to Mary Queen of Scots (Edinburgh, 1896). (11)
