Viardot, one of the great divas of her era, writes: "Instead of going to enjoy myself at your house this afternoon, I was obliged to stay at home and cough, cough, cough like a miserable old dog...Much do I regret it...for I would have caught a glimpse of you and heard some very nice things, no doubt."
