Mascagni's one-act "Cavalleria rusticana" (1890) started a trend for 'versimo' operas -- VIARDOT, PAULINE. Autograph letter signed ("P Viardot") to Mrs Campbell Clarke, Paris, 1 May [1894]. 1 page, a small notecard, with autograph envelope . Viardot, one of the great divas of her era, writes: "Instead of going to enjoy myself at your house this afternoon, I was obliged to stay at home and cough, cough, cough like a miserable old dog...Much do I regret it...for I would have caught a glimpse of you and heard some very nice things, no doubt."
