Lot of 5 CDVs of identified officers, 4 serving with the 30th Massachusetts Infantry including their commander Colonel Nathan Dudley. All taken in Louisiana where the regiment saw much of their service with activity in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Port Hudson. All but one image taken by McPherson & Oliver. CDV vignetted portrait of Nathan Dudley (1825-1910). McPherson & Oliver: Baton Rouge, LA, n.d. Imprint on verso. Nathan Dudley enlisted on May 7, 1861 and was commissioned as a captain into the 10th US Infantry. He was promoted to colonel and transferred to the 30th Massachusetts Infantry on February 8, 1862. During this time he led the 30th Massachusetts and served as an aide for General Banks. He was promoted several times by brevet, and transferred again on September 13, 1864 to the 15th US Infantry. After the Civil War he reverted to his regular rank and transferred to the 3rd US Cavalry. He would continue his career out west, particularly in New Mexico Territory and the LIncoln County War (1877-1879). He would serve as a lieut. colonel for a time with the Buffalo Soldiers in the 9th Cavalry before transferring again the 1st Cavalry as a colonel. CDV vignetted portrait of Samuel Knapp Towle (1829-1895). McPherson & Oliver: Baton Rouge, LA, n.d. Imprint on verso. Signed in ink on verso: "S.K. Towle / Sing 30 Mass. Vols." Towle was a 31-year-old physician from Haverhill, MA who enlisted on July 5, 1861 and was commissioned as an assistant physician into Field & Staff with the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. He was promoted to surgeon and transferred to the 30th Massachusetts Infantry on April 7, 1862. Mustered out on November 18, 1864 and would be a member of GAR Post #47 (Major Howe) in Haverhill. CDV vignetted portrait identified as John G. Robinson (ca 1836-1916). McPherson & Oliver: Baton Rouge, LA, n.d. Imprint on verso. Pencil inscription to the verso identifies the subject and notes that he served with the 6th, 8th, and 48th Massachusetts Infantries from 1862-1864. Robinson first enlisted with the 6th Massachusetts Infantry on August 31, 1862, he was mustered in on the 31st as corporal into Co. I, and was mustered out on June 3, 1863 after the 9-months expiration at Lowell. He mustered in on May 10, 1864 into the 8th Co. of the Unattached Massachusetts Infantry. His occupation was listed as "piper" and he was promoted to sergeant on April 27, 1864. He was mustered out on August 11, 1864 and was a member of GAR Post #146 (General Lawton) in Lawrence, MA. CDV studio portrait of Joseph Davis (b. ca 1841). McPherson & Oliver: Baton Rouge, LA, n.d. Imprint on verso. Signed in ink on verso. Davis is seated in full uniform with a long overcoat holding his hat with the infantry badge visible. Davis, of Medford, enlisted on April 16, 1861 and was mustered in as a private into Co. E of the 5th MA Infantry on May 1st. He was mustered out on July 31, 1861 after the expiration of 3 months of service. He re-enlisted on January 4, 1862 as a hospital steward into the 30th MA Infantry. He would be promoted twice, to 2nd lieut. of Co. E on August 21, 1862 and to 1st lieut. on Oct. 22, 1863. He was discharged for disability on February 12, 1865. CDV vignetted portrait of John Milton Grosvenor Parker (1826-1888). E. Jacobs: New Orleans, LA, n.d. Imprint on verso. Signed in ink on recto, signed in pencil on verso. Pencil inscription on verso identifies subject with dates of enlistment, resignation, and residence. Parker of Lowell enlisted on Sept. 20, 1861 and was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant on December 6th into Co. G of the 30th MA Infantry. He was promoted to quartermaster 4 days later and he would resign for unknown reasons on March 26, 1862. He was a member of GAR post #42 (B.F. Butler) in Lowell. Provenance:Eugene R.
