MASSACHUSETTS] The General Laws and Liberties of the Massachusets Colony: Revised & Re-Printed. By order of the General Court holden at Boston, May 15th. 1672. Edward Rawson Secr . Cambridge: Printed by Samuel Green, for John Usher of Boston, 1672. The third edition of the laws of Massachusetts, but the first and only edition of this date (the earlier laws were 1648 and 1660). Old (possibly original) ruled calf. 10 1/8 x 6 3/4 inches (26 x 17 cm); [4], 161, [1, blank], 162-170, [1, blank] [27], [1, blank], collating A-C^(2), D-G^(4) H-Z, 2A-2R^(2) ^(2)A-G^(2); followed by 6 pp. printed text and a 10 pp. manuscript continuation. The seal of the colony (not found in all copies) is stamped on A1r. Boards detached and heavily rubbed, spine defective, internally preceded by 2 ff. including one full page of manuscript (in the same hand as the ms. at the rear). A1, the seal leaf (otherwise blank), detached at the gutter margin, somewhat toned throughout, some leaves exhibiting a faint brown stain in the gutter margin. Several marginal tears just entering text without loss, a few rust spots etc. The author and lawyer Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s copy, with his bookplate and his name written upon the title (together with an earlier name, indistinct, perhaps "W. Breilles"), Bar Association stamp on title verso. An interesting association copy of a book that is very rare in commerce -- Dana was, of course, the author of Two Years before the Mast. This is the issue with the title with a period after "Re-printed" in line 8 and a comma after "Boston" in line 9. The stamped seal appears in various places at the beginning of the work, the precise location varying from copy to copy (some copies lack it entirely). The six pages at the rear of this copy, with the caption title Several Laws and Orders made at the General Court Holden in Boston the 15th of May 1672 are not called for in the standard collation; they are separately paginated 1-6 and collate A^(2), A2 (repeated with different text). This is certainly Evans 169; ideally A^(4), the final leaf (missing here) is blank. The manuscript continuation at the rear is in the same early hand as the introductory leaf, and takes the laws to May 27 of 1674, and adds an index for the entire work, making this an unusually complete example of the Massachusetts laws for the early Colonial period. This work was purchased by the New York Bar Association from the Dana sale May 18, 1934, for $800 according to an old newspaper clipping laid in to this copy. Evans 168, 169; ESTC R208; Charlemagne Tower 132, 134. C The New York City Bar Association
