MATHER, Cotton (1663-1728). Wonders of the Invisible World: Being an Account of the Tryals of Several Witches Lately Executed in New-England: And of several Remarkable Curiosities therein Occurring . London: John Dunton, 1693. 4 o (183 x 130 mm). Half-title, 62 pages. (Title trimmed with loss of imprint and border, closely trimmed, 6 leaves with loss of headline, 5 leaves with loss of text.) Modern half calf, marbled boards (rubbed). Second edition of Mather's famous justification of the judges' decision at the Salem witch trials. In the work Mather argues for the justice of the verdicts based on contemporary standards, both English and American, for convicting a witch. He did not attend any of the trials, but did attend one of the executions and there publicly defended the courts. "Mather's report on the trials is the last important exposition on witchcraft that was written while the superstition remained generally unquestioned" (Streeter). Alden & Landis 693/116; Holmes (C) 454C; Howes M399; Sabin 46605; Simmons 1693#13 (ref); Wing M1175.
