Beschreibung:

Matthias Weischer Untitled (Hochhaus) 2001 Oil on canvas. 57 1/4 x 70 in. (145.4 x 177.8 cm). Signed and dated “MATTHIAS WEISCHER 2001” on the reverse.
Provenance Galerie Kleindienst, Leipzig Catalogue Essay Matthias Weischer is one of the highly acclaimed young artists to emerge from what has become known as the new Leipzig School of Painters. In the present lot, Weischer uses architectural ideas to create powerful pictorial tensions: seemingly bleak post-modern sterile buildings become sentient in their order when set against the jagged edges of the nature surrounding them. The incongruous perspective heightens this psychological tension: an almost Darwinian struggle for survival, as the simplicity and Hockney-esque lines of the buildings merge together with his characteristic solid shadows, seem child-like and incongruous with their surroundings. Paint drips off the canvas in contrast to the perfectly depicted buildings. The flowers are aggressive and portentous and this is emphasized by the dream-like industrial plants which ironically seem more harmonious in nature than the fauna depicted. Weischer uses solid shadows and clean lines to create a powerful landscape fusing the experience of space and time within one pictorial entity. Read More
