McARTHUR, Captain John. Statement of the Improvement and Progress of the Breed of Fine Woolled Sheep in New South Wales. London: 1803. 2° (330 x 205mm.). 2 pp. text, 1 page blank, 1 page with endorsement: "Copy of a Statement delivered by Captain McArthur at the Right Honourable Lord Hobart's Office, 26th July, 1803." Folded, in modern red morocco-backed marbled box. This pamphlet describes the details of McArthur's first attempts to establish the wool industry in Australia. As a result of this proposal, he returned to New South Wales with an unprecedented government grant of 5000 acres of the best pasture land in the colony, to be doubled if tangible results were forthcoming, as well as some rare Spanish sheep from the royal flocks. Through his scheme, McArthur promoted British interest in the potential of Australian sheep-farming, and was able to "inspire and communicate the enticing vision of a great commercial staple." ( Australian Dictionary of Biography , vol. II, p. 153-9.) Ferguson describes the work as 'VERY RARE', and lists only three copies, one in private hands. Ferguson 380.
