Medals, Family Medals, a group of four, with original documents, two killed-in-action, one wounded-in-action, Father: RSM Millward Smith, Scottish Horse (1903-08)/Cpl-Mjr. Royal Horse Guards (1882-1903): Army LSGC Medal, VR (1900) - 1173 Q.M. Cpl-Mjr. M. Smith R. Hor. Gds. - full entitlement, silver plaque inscribed 'Presented to Corp. Maj. Millward Smith by the Warrant and Non-Commissioned Officers Royal Horse Guards as a mark of esteem on his leaving the Regiment, 1903', early 20th century biographical notes of service career, testimonials and coped service documents. Served 1882-1908 with the colours in the Royal Horse Guards, Scottish Horse and Imperial Yeomanry - twenty-six years in home service; thus Long Service Good Conduct medal was full entitlement. Son 1: L/Cpl Arthur Benjamin Smith Scots Guards - killed-in-action at Ypres, November 11th, 1914: 1914 Star/claspp (6163 L. Cpl. A.B. Smith, S. Gds), British War and Victory Medal (6163 Pte. A.B. Smith, S. Gds.), WW1 memorial death plaque and parchment memorial scroll (Alfred (sic) Benjamin Smith , copied research, medal index card, Commonwealth War Graves and medal roll. After the Battle of Ypres, Arthur's battalion paraded just sixty-nine men, commanded by a singular captain, the sole surviving officer - commemorated on the Menin Gate. N.B. Correct forename is Arthur, as confirmed by Commonwealth Graves and medal roll. Son 2: S.Sjt. Alfred Millward Smith, MiD, RHA - wounded-in-action (lost arm - committed suicide), 1914 Star/clasp (41823 Ftr. A. Smith RHA), British War and Victory/MiD oakleaves Medals (41823 A.S.Sjt. A.M. Smith RA) pin-mounted for wear, silver war badge, wound certificate, SWB roll, riband bar with silver rosette and oakleaves, Corps de Commissionaire's Badge, RHA cap badge/crown/shoulder titles all in brass, MiD, L/G 01.01.1916, for gallant and distinguished service in the field, original documents/portrait and family photographs in uniform, copied research. Alfred Smith enlisted in the RHA in 1906 aged 15 and served on the Western Front from 05.10.1914, rising to the rank of staff serjeant. He was mentioned in despatches following action in 1915, and was severely wounded in action, losing his left arm, resulting in his discharge on 18.09.1918. He joined the Corps de Commissionaires (see photo in uniform with false arm/hand), but die to the trauma of the circumstances of his disability, he committed suicide on 16.03.1932. Grandson 1: 7349467 L/Cpl Arthur George Smith R.A.M.C. - killed-in-action, Anzio, 19.03.1944, WW2, group of five, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence and 1939-1945 War Medals - unnamed as issued, portrait photograph in uniform, photograph of grave, Beach Head Cemetery, Anzio and Holy Trinity Church, London SW1 circular announcing his death. Provenance: By direct descent through the Smith family; acquired by the current vendor from Kenneth Millward Smith, 2nd grandson, in 2005 with a copy of his birth certificate demonstrating direct descent.
