Oribasius of Pergamum, physician to the Emperor Julian the Apostate, compiled several medical works at the suggestion of Julian, who was concerned to propagate the writings and the knowledge of pagan Antiquity in response to the growing Christianization of the Roman Empire. Oribasius' Collectiones medicae , which survives only in part, is important because it preserves excerpts and paraphrases of earlier medical authors whose works are known only from this source. (5)
