Small 8vo, original red cloth, sides blindstamped, spine gilt-lettered "Melville's Marquesas Islands Murray," small, neat repairs at ends of spine, two fore-corners a bit worn, endpapers cracked at inner hinges, half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION of Melville's first book, Second Issue of the text ("Pomare" on p. 19, line 1), a rare variant binding mentioned by BAL in a note under the section "First Issue, Cloth, Binder's Variant A": "...A Copy has been seen (Yale) with the spine lettered [as above on this present copy]...Also noted on a set of 1847 sheets..."; map at p. [xviii], terminal catalogue dated "March 1846." BAL 13652. A "June 1849" ownership inscription on front endpaper.
