Parallel text in English and French. 17 hand colored engraved plates. 19th century half morocco and marbled boards, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt titles and decorations. Scuffing to boards, minor spotting. WITH: MENDES DA COSTA, EMANUEL. AND GEORGE HUMPHREY. Conchology, or the Natural History of Shells.. [London: 1770-1772]. 6 parts in 1. Folio. 12 plates. Modern cloth. Lacking title pages (one provided in facsimile), browning. FIRST EDITION, with parallel English and French text. Mendes da Costa was one of the first Jewish Fellows of the Royal Society of London, and became its librarian. This work was dedicated to Sir Ashton Lever (of the Museum Leverianum), whose collection included specimens that were probably purchased from da Costa. Nissen IVB 2785.
