[Mercury Redstone 3] The triumphant recovery of the first American in space, Alan Shepard. Dean Conger, 5 May 1961. Printed 1961. Two vintage gelatin silver prints on fiber-based paper [NASA images S-61–2714 and 61-MR3–98]. Each 20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), the first numbered “NASA S-61–2714” in black in top margin, with NASA credit stamp on the verso, the second with NASA caption numbered “61-MR3–98” on the verso (NASA HeadQuarters, Washington, D.C.). (2). Alan Shepard became the first American in space on May 5, 1961 following the successful recovery of Freedom 7 in the Atlantic Ocean and immediately became a national hero. The 15-minute suborbital hop which took him to a height of 116 miles at more than 2 km (1.5 miles) per second before splashdown near Bermuda, 302 miles downrange from Cape Canaveral. First photograph: Only a half hour after liftoff, the space pioneer came triumphantly aboard the carrier USS Lake Champlain after the rescue helicopter had deposited he and his Freedom 7 capsule on deck. His first words were “Man, what a ride!” Second photograph: [NASA caption] NASA Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. Jokes with doctors while inflight between the U. S. Navy Carrier Champlain and the Grand Bahama Islands. Astronaut Shepard was the first Project Mercury pilot to fly a suborbital flight. Dean Conger was one of the National Geographic Society’s most famous photographers, named Newspaper Photographer of the Year three times during the 1950s and Magazine Photographer of the Year in the 1962 Pictures of the Year competition. He extensively covered the first American mission into space for NASA and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine. Condition Very light longitudinal identation at center of first print, otherwise glossy prints in excellent condition.
